I've got a game idea that I've been wanting to really get cracking on, called Mojave. I've probably got some old versions of the game somewhere public. If you can find them, you can keep them.
Since quitting the very first versions of the game I worked on when I was 14-15 years old due to atrocious netcode and being limited by the capabilities of GameMaker, the lore and gameplay loop has been workshopped many times. Here's how it goes now:
Set in a not-so-distant dystopian future where an authoritarian oligarchy has overthrown the United States government. Several high-profile rebel groups pop up around the country. In the unsuspecting, backwater province of Mojave, a disconnected, decentralized rebel group known as the Frontier Militias begin causing trouble.
The provincial military police, known as the Mojave Authority, are so neglected and so underfunded by the Supreme State Authority that they aren't able to effectively quell these ongoing rebel attacks.
The breaking point was the South Fork Train Bombing.
The Supreme State Authority, with a growing cybernetics program, begins expressing interest in building a massive-scale cybernetics manufacturing and "enhanced troop" production facility. The Mojave Authority latches onto this idea, convincing the higher-ups to construct such a facility in Mojave, given how sparsely populated and empty the province is. The Mojave Authority hopes that this will give more relevance to their organization so that they can secure more resources to fight the rebel groups.
The actual game takes place after the construction of the Mojave Central Facility. You play as a member of the Frontier Militias completing missions (a la Deep Rock Galactic or Payday 2) solo or with a squad (mix and match with real people on co-op multiplayer or NPCs). What I'm not sure about is how story-like and linear the missions should be. Could they be entirely inconsequential to the story? Lightly tied to it (mostly small-scale operations)? Or entirely based on the story (what you do has an immediate effect on the story)? I'm thinking the second of the three. That way I can add more missions without it seeming like the story line is huge.
Another very important thing I want in the game is some good ol' classic PvP gamemodes. Pick a server and jump in. And that's why good netcode is so important.
As far as gameplay, It's a 2D sidescrolling shooter with lots of emphasis on movement techniques and arcade-like tactics. Think Soldat and Liero with tighter movement, and the Worms games' arcade-y physics and weapons.
MOJAVE PROVINCE
Mojave is a province in the western American Federation, encompassing the majority of the former state of Nevada, as well as a large southwestern portion of the former state of California. The population of Mojave is approximately 80,200. The capital of Mojave is Los Oteros. Most of the SSA's training and experimentation facilities are located in Mojave, due to the low population density and large swaths of uninhabited land. However as a result, some towns have become abandoned due to extensive government experimentation without their knowledge.
SETTLEMENTS
MOJAVE CENTRAL FACILITY
Mojave Central Facility is a multipurpose facility in the northeast corner of the province. It is the oldest and largest facility in the province, beginning construction in 2066 and finishing in 2070. Mojave Central Facility’s main purpose is to build, test, and train cyborg units. The western wing of the facility is used for containment of prisoners who are used for the construction of the cyborgs. The central warehouse is where construction of the cyborgs takes place, and the eastern wing is used for shipping out cyborg units. The northern wing is used for producing cybernetics and other pieces of technology to be used in the production of cyborgs. The southern wing is used for housing scientists, workers, and soldiers. There are four guard towers surrounding the perimeter of the property, with highly trained SSA Snipers standing guard.
HELLTOWN
A small silver mining town in the south of the province. It sits on the edge of Cañon de Plata. At its peak, Helltown's population was 122. The town then began losing population due to bad health, lack of resources, executions, and suicides. After the SSA Takeover of 2064, the town only declined further, after gas bombs were dropped in the vicinity and the already limited water supply was poisoned by the gas. The mine nearby was abandoned long before the gas filled the shafts, but now it is extremely dangerous to enter the shafts due to the gas. Supposedly, there are beings mutated by the chemical components in the gas that have begun to dwell in the mines and have emerged to the surface and overtaken Helltown.
FRONTIER
The town of Frontier is located north of Frontier Lake. It is the second largest town in the county, behind Los Oteros. The Frontier Militia is based here, which is the largest paramilitary group in the country other than the Supreme State Authority. It was originally founded in 1965 as a camp for the Frontier dredge.
COPPER SPRINGS
A small town, once was the site of the Horseshoe copper mine, until it was permanently closed when the miners began to get sick and hysterical en masse, with symptoms similar to that of radiation poisoning, despite there being negligible radiation levels present, even in the darkest corners of the mine. It’s rumored that you can hear a faint mechanical buzzing that grows louder the deeper you venture.
DEADHORSE
Deadhorse is a town founded in the mid 1800s when a group of haulers transporting copper extracted from the nearby Horseshoe mine found a horse skeleton and decided to camp there for the night. It became a popular rest stop for all manner of travellers. It’s also the site of the Deadhorse Salt Flats, where it’s rumored that old United States secret bunkers lie deep underground, carrying secrets pre-SSA.
SOUTH FORK
South Fork is a small railroad community in southwestern Mojave. Most notable for being the site of the South Fork disaster, the town is under the control of the Frontier Militia and as a result has had trade issues since the incident. The town’s cargo train station is a crucial point in the rail line for transporting oil from Los Oteros in the north, in addition to the trade of general goods and armaments. But the blockades established by the Frontier Militia crippled the community’s trade and economy, forcing vigilantes to begin secretly smuggling these imports through the town. Despite the Frontier Militia’s best efforts, the smuggling operation has prevailed. As a result, and despite the blockades, South Fork is still one of the most active trading sites in the county.
LOS OTEROS
The name “Los Oteros” in English means “the hills.” It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Helada mountain range. Los Oteros is the largest city in Mojave, and is where most provincial and federal government offices are located. As such, there is a heavy military presence in the city. Los Oteros is home to one of the largest underground black markets called The Railroad, which is secretly facilitated and run by a shadowy group known as The Hand. Los Oteros is an industrial epicenter, with most of the Mojave province’s manufacturing being centered here or in the surrounding area. Los Oteros is also well known for being a primary producer and exporter of much of the country’s domestic oil supply. Due to extremely relaxed environmental regulations, a heavy smog sits over most of the city for nearly the entire year. “Los Oteros - The Mojave Desert’s Dreariest Dump!”
FACTIONS
FRONTIER MILITIAS
ts pmo
The Frontier Militias are an ad-hoc paramilitary group headquartered in the town of Frontier. The militias periodically stage revolts in towns around the province, using salvaged and makeshift equipment and weapons to do so. Often the revolts are meant to catch the present SSA troops by surprise to gain an advantage and drive them out by force. Only two of the 36 revolts have been deemed “successful,” those being the Battle of the Dredge and the South Fork Disaster. The Frontier Militias are somewhat united, but don’t exactly have a comprehensive management structure.
SUPREME STATE AUTHORITY
The Supreme State Authority is the ruling organization in the American Federation. They forcefully overthrew the government in 2064, instating a shadowy collection of high-ranking individuals as supreme leaders. The SSA then began building the military and slowly exterminating civilians to keep the population under control and to reduce consumption of materials. The supreme state authority is a secretive organization whose ultimate goal is world domination. Their military skill, strength, and power are growing rapidly, with international powers becoming threatened by such potential force.
At the top: The Dark Few. The shadowy oligarchs running the show. Nobody knows who they are. One can only suspect that their ultimate goal is to control all of the world and continue to exploit Earth and the rest of the Solar System.
Next: The Council. 10 members who meet below the Dark Few. One head for each province. The representative system of old is flipped on its head. Rather than a narrowing-down of public opinion, the Dark Few issues instructions and agendas, and each member of the Council must figure out the most effective way to implement the agenda in their province.
Next: The Departments. Segmented organizations that receive directives from their superior Council member. These include Infrastructure, provincial military police, propaganda, labor, etc.
MOJAVE AUTHORITY
The Mojave Authority is a division of the SSA Military Police Force. Compared to the other military police divisions in the country, the Mojave Authority is somewhat neglected by the SSA in terms of funding, training, and materials, due to the SSA believing that there isn’t much reason to invest in a division in such a sparsely populated region. As such, the Mojave Authority is not managed well and it isn’t uncommon for stationed troops to simply withdraw from a scene if things get too rough.
WASTELAND MARAUDERS
The Wasteland Marauders are not one single group, although the term is used to describe any group of marauders or bandits. They often will travel together in small groups of 6 to 7 members, and will attempt to raid small camps and towns, however it is rare that they venture into civilization.
THE HAND
The Hand is supposedly running the black market known as The Railroad, but there’s barely any information on what they do to keep The Railroad running or what facilitating The Railroad would benefit them, unless they are secretly supplying sellers or somehow taking a cut of credits spent. It is also debated among those in that sphere about whether or not The Hand even exists. Some speculate that it does and that it’s an underground band of members from a Frontier Militia or even the SSA military that smuggles surplus weapons and contraband to sellers in The Railroad in exchange for credits or even as a recruiting tactic. Many people who participate in Railroad activities, however, insist that The Hand is a highly secretive and decentralized group that controls a wide network of underground trading and black market activities across the American Federation.
DISASTERS / BATTLES
THE SOUTH FORK TRAIN BOMBING
In 2068, a small squad from the Frontier Militias attempted to drive MA and SSA forces out of the town of South Fork, a trading and rail hub. Under the cover of night, the squad planted C4 onto 3 off-road vehicles and parked them on the north-south railroad leading into the town from Los Oteros. While waiting for a train to arrive, the squad assaulted a nearby MA installation and opened fire on troops and civilians. While fighting, a freight train crashed into the vehicles on the track and the C4 was detonated, killing 6 civilians, 2 Militia members, and 1 MA troop. The train then derailed into the MA installation and collided with a propane tank. The propane tank exploded, killing 10 people. The train destroyed 2 buildings and destroyed 4 vehicles. The train was stuck for 3 days, and a band of Marauders quickly scrambled to the scene and stole thousands of credits worth of cargo that the train was carrying. While the train was stuck, the MA forces withdrew temporarily from the town and the Militia established blockades around the town to prevent future trade in or out of the town. While this is viewed as a successful operation by the Frontier Militias, it is only a matter of time before South Fork is assaulted by MA and federal SSA forces and the Frontier Militias are crushed in South Fork.

CANON: STORY OF MOJAVE
In the mid 21st century, the United States government is in shambles. Rampant corruption and divisiveness has resulted in little progress being made and poor management of general operations of the country, and as a result the populace and economy has suffered. A small group of government officials, over time, have built a large but secretive following and begin the undercover process of dissolving the US government operations and constitution. Over time, the group gains massive authority and power over the country, and they instate a group of shadowy individuals as oligarchs. They call themselves the Supreme State Authority.
During the early years of their rule, they began to dump massive amounts of money and resources into building the military, while also investing heavy research into military vehicles, aircraft, drones, artillery, firearms, and exosuits.
In order to reduce consumption of resources by the general populace, they utilized labor camps and citizens deemed to be “unproductive” were arrested under fabricated charges and put to work in the labor camps. Those incarcerated, particularly in prisons, were often neglected or overworked in order to get them to expire faster. Incarcerated individuals, either in prisons or labor camps, with excellent cognitive or physical abilities were chosen to be shipped off to laboratories to have experiments and tests performed on them.
Soon enough, rebel groups started popping up around the country. Mojave was no exception. Citizens in the town of Frontier began to target Mojave Authority troops and assets in the town and the surrounding area. Eventually, these citizens organized into individual rebel militias, which became known as the Frontier Militias.
Then the South Fork Train Bombing happened.
Soon after the South Fork Train Bombing, the Mojave Authority dug deeper with their limited resources and finally uncovered the true extent of the Frontier Militias. They had suspected that the small skirmishes here and there were connected by a common group, but nothing this established or integrated within the culture of their province, and so quickly integrated as well.
They had a big problem on their hands. The Mojave Authority wasn’t able to crush the rebel groups since they lacked the resources that other provinces had been granted. So they asked the Supreme State Authority. Constantly. And were denied. Constantly. That, or were appeased with scraps that were used up near instantly, just to keep them quiet for a bit while the SSA dealt with real issues, issues that mattered, instead of nothing skirmishes in a backwater province whose only export was oil.
A domestic oil supply was valuable, no doubt, but at a time when even nuclear fission technology was being phased out in favor of better alternatives, and electric vehicles had been commonplace for almost a century already, an economy based on bare minimum exports of cheap oil that nobody needed could only be sustainable for so long. But the Mojave province was stuck in the past, rather, stuck in stasis, in a way, and so they sustained themselves with the oil they drilled. Nothing would change if Mojave was wiped off the map. But that was useful.
The SSA had been expressing interest in developing cybernetic technologies, and was scouting a place to build the first and central cybernetic testing facility. The Mojave Authority jumped on this opportunity, with chief officials suggesting that the facility be built a little over 60 miles east of Los Oteros, in a sparsely populated region of the province, in order to bring more federal focus to the province of Mojave and allow the MA more resources and sway in the federal government. The SSA saw this as a strategic move, as isolating such an integral place of military development in such an unsuspecting and sparsely populated area would keep it a secret from the public and from the rest of the world.
The planning process began. … need to continue this crap
